You know we both agreed that it would be a great consolation and boon to humanity to know - absolutely know - and not just believe, that there is a life beyond the grave. We both thought that to obtain such knowledge through mediums was harmful both to them and to us. Perhaps you remember my telling you how many cases of insanity had been brought on by mediumship and hypnotism. You remember that I said that many of these cases had started with the Planchette. You know what a harmless and simple amusement the little Planchette board seems to be; but I believe that a large percentage of those cases of insanity began with that little device. Automatic writing led to other forms of mediumship, and mediumship led directly to insanity. There is no question about this in my mind.
