From this time on, for many years, Mr. Longfellow's life flowed in a tranquil and full stream, brimmed with added home affections, as children came to fill the measure; reflecting the clear or slightly clouded sky, and the near persons and events as it passed them, -- with his continuous and little-varied college duties as a background to the landscape. Of this life, the best picture will be his own journals, with here and there a passage from his correspondence. January 6. We read in the evening Jean Paul's Flegeljahre, translated (alas, how poorly!) by Mrs. Lee. It is a delicious book, and gives us the greatest delight. 7th. A great rain; the whole village under water. Continued the Flegeljahre. How fine are the figures! The pendulum of the clock in the belfry "mowing like the scythe of Time;" the beggar's staff "a spoke from Ixion's wheel." 8th. Striving, but alas, how vainly! to work upon Evangeline. One interruption after another, till I long to fly to the desert for a season. 9th. Last day in college for this term. Mrs. Lee makes innumerable blunders in her translation of the Flegeljahre. One of the worst is this: englisches Anldcheln -- " angelic smile " -- she translates " English smile;" and appends this note, --" Jean Paul often expresses his admiration of the frank English smile." This is a step beyond Gower's " lisp in English when they lie," in [his translation of] Faust. 11th. Time speeds away, and with these dim eyes I accomplish little. "Oh, give me light!" 12th. The vacation is at hand. I hope before its close to get far on in Evangeline. Two cantos are now done which is a good beginning. 13th.
